Several large corporations have headquarters in Uptown, including Bank of America, Duke Energy, and the East Coast operations of Wells Fargo. This is a popular location for businesses, so the surrounding restaurants and bars, nearby residences, and other amenities appeal to the working professional. Uptown hosts a number of green spaces and public parks, including the 5.4-acre Romare Bearden Park located near the center of the city.


Nearby Schools and Higher Education

With a high concentration of commercial buildings in Center City, the neighborhood only has two public schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, with six other schools bordering the area. There are 34 private schools in and around Center City. Uptown is home to a number of prestigious universities, including Johnson and Wales University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Johnson C. Smith University, Queens University of Charlotte, and many more.



Center City got the name “Uptown” when early residents of Charlotte rode horses or walked up Trade Street to a trading post at the top of a ridge between Sugar and Irwin creeks. They would say they were going “up to town”, which was later shortened to Uptown. The name resurfaced in the 1980s when redevelopment proponents wanted to shine a new positive light on the area. Several relics from Charlotte’s founding days are alive and well in Center City, including historic statues, landmarks and business signs.
