Residents of SouthPark enjoy a quick commute to local employers or work in the Center City, which is about six miles away. Convenient access to the public transportation makes travel in and out of SouthPark even easier for residents and visitors.


SouthPark is the second largest employment area in the state, with an estimated 40,000 employees; Center City is the largest and downtown Raleigh is the third-largest. This region’s burgeoning professional environment contributes to the city’s accolade as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The SouthPark neighborhood has 17 schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, including Beverly Woods Elementary, Selwyn Elementary, Sharon Elementary, Alexander Graham Middle, Carmel Middle, Myers Park High School and South Mecklenburg High School, the latter of which was named seventh in North Carolina’s best high schools. There are 40 private schools in the SouthPark vicinity, providing a variety of options for residents. SouthPark is located near a number of Charlotte-area colleges and universities, including Queens University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Johnson & Wales University, and more.



The neighborhood was once part of a 3,000-acre farm owned by former North Carolina Governor Cameron Morrison. Businessman Johnny Harris and his former partner, Smoky Bissell, were instrumental in developing the farm into what is now SouthPark, and they continue to announce and build office space, adding millions of existing office square footage. SouthPark was named after the SouthPark Mall, which opened in 1970 to 92,000 visitors on its first day. The area has since rapidly evolved as an employment hub, largely due to the prominent mall and thriving business economy.
